Indulgent Tormentor
This morning as I was getting ready I noticed on my Facebook feed that Beanie Games in Stockton-on-Tees was running a pre-release at 10 a.m. which I could make.

This would be my first tournament in about 7 years, since the Time Spiral pre-release and I was a bit worried about how I would perform and about meeting a new group of people.

Beanie Games was really easy to find, just across the road from one of the bigger car parks in central Stockton-on-Tees, so I got there nice and early.

I had earlier decided that I was going to pick the black seeded box as I really want the promo card – Indulgent Tormentor and if I did get enough black to play black all the better.

After opening all the boosters and pulling a second Indulgent Tormentor, I ran this deck:

Main Deck
1 Chasm Skulker
3 Frost Lynx
1 Jorubai Murk Lurker
3 Research Assistant
1 Welkin Tern

2 Indulgent Tormentor
1 Necrogen Scudder
2 Nightfire Giant
1 Typhoid Rats

1 Scuttling Doom Engine

1 Caustic Tar
1 Flesh to Dust
2 Meteorite
2 Necrobite
1 Sign in Blood

9 Swamp
7 Island
1 Mountain

1 Accursed Spirit
1 Dissipate
2 Festergloom
1 Military Intelligence
1 Peel from Reality
1 Unmake the Grave
1 Zof Shade

I went 3-0 with this and was really pleased with how it played in all except one of the games where it just decided that Islands were the only lands I needed to play all the black spells.

First round was against a Blue/Black deck which I wasn’t really sure about what it’s focus was as I won both games within 10 minutes of the start of the round, getting a mana suitable creature out each turn, e.g. one-mana on turn one, two-mana on turn two and by turn six had an Indulgent Tormentor and a Nightfire Giant out in both games with a mountain in play, this was the best that the deck ran in the tournament. 2-0 for me.

Second round was against a Blue/Red/Artifact deck, which seemed to be about getting the Angel that comes out if another spell was played that turn, again the deck ran smoothly but in one of the games his ran smoother. 2-1 for me.

Third round was against a Black/Green Convoke deck with two Siege Wurm in it, when he got this down really early in game one and I only had one small creature on deck and 10 life I realised that this may not be my game. Second and third games were close but I powered into my larger flying creatures again and at one point in both games had both of the Indulgent Tormentor in play with terrible options for him as I had Chasm Skulker on the board growing each turn if he made me draw, more creatures than him if he sacced a creature and more life than him with flyers available if he lost life. 2-1 for me.

Overall an enjoyable pre-release, liked it that I won it on my first go after a long, long time out of the scene and the venue is great, will definitely go to more there.
